Santa Rosa, NM

Side note:  Cuervo, NM, Ghost Town
Blink and you’ll miss it. Rumor has it, Cuervo began as a railroad town, but today it is undeniably a real live, easy-to-see from the interstate, ghost town. While researching Cuervo, I discovered I wasn’t the only traveler inspired by the outcropping of deserted buildings. Here’s a great photo site, in case you don’t have the nerve to get out and explore it for yourself:  www.ghosttowns.com/states/nm/cuervo.htm

SANTA ROSA, NM:

Literally perched on the high banks of the Pecos River, this tiny town’s claim to fame is that it was once a popular Route 66 destination. This makes it the perfect location for those sentimental “66 Kicks” seekers, and the Route 66 Auto Museum, with its impressive display of classic cars, is well worth a visit on your way through town.

Route 66 Auto Museum

It’s the perfect place to see some cool old cars and Route 66 memorabilia. A fabulous gift shop has everything you’ll need to celebrate the legacy of America’s Main Street. Grab a burger at the snack bar, or visit one of these diners clinging to their Route 66 roots:

Silver Moon Café

Feeding travelers since 1959, Silver Moon provides a cool experience and a real sense of Rt. 66 history with true, New Mexican flavors. 575-472-3162

Lake City Diner

Located inside a repurposed bank in Santa Rosa’s historic downtown, it’s a fun find serving decent home-style dinner options. Good steaks and New Mexican dishes pair well with Alien Ale from Roswell, NM.

Quietly celebrating a history of railroading and ranching, Santa Rosa legends boast a colorful cast of Wild West characters like Cherokee Dora, the infamous heart-of-gold gunslinger. South of Santa Rosa, true thrill seekers can hunt down the Billy the Kid museum and gravesite at Fort Sumner.

The Blue HoleSanta Rosa also possesses a natural wonder that draws divers from all over the world! This geographical phenomena allows divers to descend 80 feet into crystal clear water. With a stable temperature of 61’ F, divers can enjoy the waters year-round!

MORIARITY, NM
Watch for it! On the north side of I-40 near this tiny town is a FUN complex
called "FORT SUMTIN' OR OTHER".
It has plenty of fun for the whole family and a season pumpkin patch.
